2019 BOOK GROUP READING LIST:  we meet the first Monday of each month at 5pm

JANUARY:  A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles:  The story of a Russian aristocrat living under house arrest in a luxury hotel for thirty years.

FEBRUARY:  The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore:  A novel based on actual events about the nature of genius, the cost of ambition & the battle to electrify America.

MARCH:  March: A graphic novel of the inside story of the Civil Rights Movement through the eyes of its most iconic figure, Congressman John Lewis…WE WILL MEET IN WILMINGTON AT THE PETEE LIBRARY AT 6:00 PM, MARCH 13TH.

APRIL:  Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly.  Based on a true story of a NY socialite who championed a group of concentration camp survivors known as “the rabbits”.

MAY:  Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively.  Winner of the Booker Prize.  Elderly Claudia Hampton lies in a London Hospital with memories of life fluttering through her fading consciousness.

JUNE:  Book of Ages, the Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin by Jill Lapore.  About the Life of Jane Franklin, Benjamin Franklin’s sister.

JULY:  Essays After Eighty by Donald Hall.  A former poet laureate presents essays, which deliver an unexpected view from the vantage point of very old age.

AUGUST:  The Enola Holmes Mysteries by Nancy Springer.  The first book in the series, The Case of the Missing Marquess.  Enola Holmes is the 14-year old sister of the already famous Sherlock Holmes, twenty years her senior.

SEPTEMBER:  Normal People by Sally Rooney.  Second novel by Rooney, which is deeply political and about love and how difficult it is to speak to what you feel and how difficult it is to change.

OCTOBER:   Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl.

NOVEMBER:  Beartown by Frederick Backman.  About a small dying town with a big dream and the price required to make it come true.

DECEMBER:  American Journal: 50 Poems for Our Time.  Poems selected by and with an introduction by Tracy K. Smith, U.S. Poet Laureate.  Poems, which celebrate our country and our lives.  ALSO, MEMBERS WILL BRING A FAVORITE POEM FOR A POETRY READING SESSION.
